Machine: 46 pin Addi King Size or 48 pin Sentro
Skill level: Easy
You will need
• 46 or 48 pin circular knitting machine
• Yarn in your choice of color

• Small amount of red yarn (for comb)
• 2 x 15 mm safety eyes
• 3.75 mm or 4 mm crochet hook

• Yarn needle for sewing and shaping
Instructions
On your 46 (or 48) pin machine
Cast on
Work 72 rounds
Cast off
Double up and cinch, just as you would if you were making a beanie hat.
Tie the ends tightly to secure them.
Shape and add the eyes
Flatten this piece. The flat straight edge will become the top of the chicken, and the cinched ends will be the bottom. One end of the flattened edge will be the tail, and the other end will be the head. Decide where you’d like the eyes to sit, about one inch in from one end of the flattened edge, at whichever end you decide will be the head. Add the safety eyes, making sure they are even and symmetrical.
Stuff and refine the shape
Add stuffing, paying special attention to add extra stuffing at each end: One end will become the head (where the eyes are). The other will form the tail.
Close the top seam
Using a mattress stitch, sew straight across the top edge from the tail end to the front of the head. Again pay special attention to the eyes to make sure they are symmetrical.
Add a little more stuffing as you go if needed to shape the head and tail.
Secure and hide all loose ends inside.
Add the beak
With yellow yarn, stitch a small triangle or a few straight stitches centered below the eyes to form the beak.
Crochet the comb
Using red yarn and your 3.75 mm (or 4 mm) crochet hook:
Join the yarn at the very front of the head. You will work your crochet stitches in between the knitted stitches working back to create the comb along the top of the head.
Work 2 DC in the first space, 2 DC in the next, 1 slip stitch in the next, then repeat two more times: 2 DC, 2 DC, slip stitch along the top edge. This will create a wavy comb shape.
Secure and hide any remaining loose ends, and your chicken is ready to sit proudly on the shelf.
